With advent of the media’s blossoming controversy about fake news and the rendering of misinformation by them and private sources we have felt a growing frustration in attempting to find out what’s really happening in the world and obtaining a fair and honest rendering through journalism and news reporting. With the added intensity over the differences in our political landscape and those utilizing it for manipulation, our belief and trust in what we are now being told has diminished significantly. Do we believe what we hear? Who do we trust? Do they have a vested interest in what they’re telling us? Who owns the media? Are they politically biased? Prejudiced? Are they giving us the facts? “Alternate” facts? Misinformation? Who should we put our trust in? The answer has finally and essentially come to the fact that, more than ever, we must now trust ourselves.

This may seem simplistic but it’s been a long time coming. With our social structure being flooded with so many authorities, experts, pundits, licensed providers, vetted officials, approved representatives, isn’t it only natural and inevitable that we must eventually reach a saturation point in our dependency on other people for advice and permission to do only what’s generally accepted by our peer group? Doesn’t it seem like there are so many conflicting edicts presented by so many groups we’ve come to trust, yet, they almost all tell us that we must be or do something other than what we feel? Today salt is good for you. Tomorrow it’s not. Today, one politician is a criminal. The next, they’re a hero. The majority of doctors say this drug is a miracle. The next day we hear of class action lawsuits levied by lawyers on behalf of people who have been irreparably damaged by them. Who do we believe? Who can we trust? The writing on the wall begs for us to begin relearning to trust ourselves. Relearn you say? How can this be? Aren’t we a self-sustaining and self-responsible culture? Haven’t we been trained to listen to and trust our own intuition and feelings? The answer is no. We’ve been trained by our parents and the media to seek outside of ourselves for the answers to all of our important questions.

Through being browbeaten into believing that all the important answers about how and why we are to live our lives comes from an outside authority, through omission it’s been strongly inferred to us that our feelings and intuition can’t and won’t be validated, proven, vetted or authenticated by others. We’ve been trained to put all of our faith into the scientific community and the proofs that it requires. There is a perpetual drive for evidence, evidence and evidence. We must only accept proof, validation and verification by others giving us permission to act even if it doesn’t feel right. Why have we allowed ourselves to believe this? It’s safer. We can be accused of less if we can validate who we are or what we are doing by following the rules and requirements of the social status quo. The underlying expectation is, and to most of us this is unconscious, that in doing so we won’t have to be responsible for the outcome of our choices. If we do something that someone disapproves of, all we have to do is point the finger at the accepted authority and we become vindicated and faultless. We’ve done what we’re told was proper. We’re blameless. We followed "the rules." We can now expect to be loved.

If we view the universe as a self-correcting system, we must understand that all things change and evolve. The snowballing of fake news and misinformation is simply occurring as a self-correction that the universe has been slowly and naturally energizing  as a re-balancing much like a market correction. Not that it is in any way intended, although there are many of us that believe in intelligent design, but that, according to its own nature, energy “seeks” toward simplicity and conservation of itself. Our focus outside of ourselves has reached such an extreme that the pendulum must now swing toward the side of personal and internal judgment simply in order to re-balance itself. The "rub" is that it must also return us toward being accountable for our actions and inactions. We will no longer be able to remain blameless and will now risk the possibility of not being loved or included in our chosen groups, clans or families.

Moving from being externally aligned toward being internally self-directed will seem foreign to many of us and even frightening to some. We have been so indoctrinated into listening to what comes from outside of ourselves that trusting our own feelings and intuition has come to seem unnatural and even treasonous toward the society and culture that has trained us toward, essentially, remaining subservient and obedient to itself. We’ve been relentlessly bombarded with the belief that we are responsible for the welfare of others over our own…even if subconsciously. This outlook heralds all the way back to colonial times when we actually needed the help of others simply to survive. Then, this easily fell in line with Christian principles claiming that we are our “brother’s keeper.” But circumstances change over time and so do the prevailing traditions that evolve from them. So now, when it comes to our contemporary emotional and psychological health, nothing could have evolved further from the truth. Although we claim to be self-sufficient, we do need others to see ourselves “objectively.” We have gravitated so much toward a selfless and personally sacrificial extreme that we are now all in perilous danger of losing ourselves totally simply to obtain the approval and acceptance of our peers through acquiescing to their parroted and, now, obsolete traditional judgments. Yet, this makes us feel safe and blameless. The ironic part of this is that everyone is looking toward each other as an authority which amounts to only each others opinions gathered from everyone else… No longer does anyone actually have or know the necessary truths. Through accepting this mindless echo as our standard for well being, we have simply become the blind leading the blind.

The breakdown in the media is simply one more superficial indicator of how over-invested we have become in the opinions and judgments of others. The recent assertion by our new president promoting “America First” exemplifies a tacit undercurrent moving us toward returning to a sense of balance nationally. We are in dire need of bringing our feelings and intuition back into play as being a valid form of information used for our choices and direction. Our blind acceptance of the need to validate everything scientifically has obliterated the awareness and validation of our own worth except in the context of social service and responsibility. We need to begin to allow ourselves to be selfish at least to the extent that we are able to regenerate ourselves before being subjugated to the socially expected demand of service to others. “Doctor, heal thyself!” We must regain a balance between being responsible to ourselves before we can become effective in being of service to others. A drained social worker is of little use to anyone.

So, now, the recent explosion and exposure of fake news and misinformation is, essentially, providing us with an unexpected side effect and open door encouraging us to reacquaint ourselves with our own feelings and intuition while showing us the necessity of giving ourselves permission to trust our own judgment in spite of the historic and overwhelming pressure levied on us by external authority. Isn’t it funny how life always brings us back to trusting our own heart and intuition? Yet, building the courage required to live according to them is, more often than not, ignored or even buried under the fearful possibility of being socially outcast for non-compliance.

fear-1Quietly sitting in a meditation group, a question was posed by one of the members. The question asked what significance fear has in our lives. At first it seemed like a simple question but upon deeper consideration I realized that it held tremendous influence over the way I and others felt. This led me to attempt to, first, define the feeling.

Most sources defined fear as sensing and reacting to danger. But now this led me to search out the meaning of danger. The earliest meaning I could find comes from the 12th century French dangier meaning “the power to harm, mastery, authority and control.” So, essentially, fear and perceived danger are a sense or belief that we are somehow out of control or in a Fight or flightposition where life and others have power over us. Why would being out of control evoke such an intense feeling? Granted, fear is a primal feeling and involuntary reaction innate to our animal natures. But that only relates to the immediate and impending physical consequences of survival. We as humans know fear as having a much wider and more powerful influence over our daily lives. So, where then does this power come from? I believe that it is trained into us beginning with our earliest ability to think.

As children and before our metal capabilities to think are developed, we have not yet developed the discrimination between self and other so what we feel deprived of or  assailed by only seems to register as a feeling of pain or discomfort to which we simply react by crying. At that point the fear response, other than concerning our primal survival, has not yet formed as we need to have the experience of pain or discomfort, pair it with the perception of a threat coming from outside of ourselves and then create a retrievable memory of it. Memory is solely a function of the mind existing in linear time. Until we develop the capacity to think, that dimension has no relevance to us yet and hence no memory. Yet, at that age, having the experience of pain or deprivation creates a future trigger response in our animal natures to its next occurrence. Once the mind is formed and time is perceived, fear can now have a solid perceivable reference point for which it can generate feelings about future circumstances. So what are we actually saying? That animals gain an instinctual bad-feelingfear through the experience of immediate circumstances and that humans gain this too but we also develop ability to project far into the future and create fear based on “wouldn’t it be horrible if” through the power of our minds. In short, animals can feel fear in immediate circumstances but we humans have also learned to project it way into the future.

Our next question, logically, must be “how and why would we learn to do this?” I believe that our tendency to do this comes from being trained to believe that we must control ourselves and our circumstances if we are first, to stay “safe,” and, second, keep our personal world in a static state through the belief that circumstances can remain unchangeable. Even in light of the fact that we honestly know that security is an illusion, and this is still an unconscious knowing for most of us, we still consciously hold an irrational belief that the world can be animal masteryheld in a static state and that we should be able to control the rest of the world and others in it. But now, we have to ask “where did this irrational belief come from?” The answer is that we’ve been taught by our parents to expect to be able to control our circumstances. As children, how would have been able to know any different? At that age, we simply accept it as fact because our parents tell us it is so. What’s sad and disconcerting is that many of our parents still believe that this is so as they were taught to believe this by their parents.

At this point you’re probably asking yourself what fear has to do with eclipsing the heart. Right? To understand this we must first recognize that the heart uses feelings and intuition as its medium of exchange for communication. We first feel and intuit and then thinking is used to put it in a comprehensible form we can recognize, explain, create a judgment about (preference) and then commit it to our memory. What we think is an afterthought. While feelings and intuition are innate to humans, thinking, or our mental facilities, are all learned. This occurs after we are born through our exposure to the physical world within the landscape of time (past, present and future). In other words, we come into this life with feeling and intuition fully in operation already but skill in thinking must be acquired and developed before it can be used.

Feeling and intuition, the heart’s non-descriptive form of bringing our attention to something, is forever delivering us urges and impulses that are neither comprehended nor explained until they are subjected to the separative discrimination of the mind. Feelings arise in a moving wave and intuition occurs in a flash. It is not until the mind springs into action that they become “solidified” as a judgment of preference specifying whether we’d like to approach or avoid the experience expressed by them.

strategy-1As our mental capacity develops more and more and our childhood physical world begins to take dominance over who we are and what we pay attention to, our feelings and intuition slowly become submerged under the monumental weight and emphasis on thinking. Thinking gradually becomes the strategic and dominant force determining virtually all the choices we make. When our mental functions change the channel to fear, it short circuits all of our considerations for how we choose to act…or not with “wouldn’t it be horrible if.” Our feelings and intuition no longer even have the opportunity to have an influence other than the fear generated by the mind through “wouldn’t it be horrible if.” In this way fear totally eclipses the heart. Other feelings and our intuition are still there but essentially crushed under the weight of our fear invoking mental gymnastics.

Granted, the fear that’s triggered by fight or flight encounters (innate animal survival instincts) is essentially unavoidable. But the fear that’s generated by our “wouldn’t it be horrible if” is something that can be reprogrammed. Remember, it’s only a mental perspective that has been trained into us. It can also be replaced by reprogramming ourselves to say and feel “wouldn’t it be great if.” All we have to do is consider the beneficial aspects of whatever circumstances we feel intimidated by. It’ll take work and time but in the long run the physical and emotional benefits far outweigh the tension, anxiety and stress triggered by the “wouldn’t it be horrible if.”

soulmates-2I’ve written previously about soul mates and past life connections. But I’d like to cover more deeply the characteristics, dynamics and flavor brought to us through the recognition of our past connections. I‘d also like to clarify a major misconception about what soul mates are and how best to recognize them. Whether you believe in reincarnation or not is not as important as the effect these kinds of feelings and connections may have on you regardless of your beliefs about it let alone dealing with the dynamics of any type of recognition.

Before I begin it would be prudent to give you my take on what a soul mate is as distinguished from a simple past life connection. A soul mate is a past life connection with whom we’ve had a profound experience. It could be as lovers, enemies, parents, children, mentors or anyone with whom the experience shaped our lives and attitudes in an important way. Upon meeting in this life there is a depth of “knowing” them with a strong sense of familiarity as if we’ve known each other for years usually including unexplained feelings of safety, comfort or trust. They often come into our life during a crisis period giving us grounding and support and then leave when the worst is over. Yet, our arch enemy will also fit the bill but with an unexplained sense of danger, discomfort and a distrust of their actions and intentions. Simple past life connections are similar but without the profundity, intensity or unexplained qualities that are elicited when meeting our soul mates. There is simply recognition of having an indescribable feeling of familiarity as if we should have something in common through the connection but being more nebulous and much less defined in terms of our personal feelings and intuition. Past life connections may also be family members other than nuclear, personal associations and connections coming mostly from peripheral past life experiences.

The most common misnomer is that soul mates are impassioned lovers that reconnect in a current life and that once found all aspects of the new relationship will progress without incident. This is a frequent belief held among westerners in that our mindset sees life as a series of challenges needing resolution and that once these challenges have been met, difficulties will cease and the rest of life will end as in a fairy tale. But we must remember that life is a process and not a destination and that if our life continues, there are bound to be more challenges simply by virtue of the fact that we all continue to grow and evolve.

samurai duelAlthough soul mates can be returning lovers, this is not as often the case as we might think. The intense connection felt by the impassioned lovers can also be felt between arch enemies. In this we need to understand that arch enemies are just as tuned in to each other as impassioned lovers are. This tuning in occurs through intensely, even obsessively, directing an abundant amount of our attention to our lover or our enemy. Energy builds just like money in a growing investment. It must also be realized that if our attention occurs within a setting of emotional immaturity, the lovers can shift to being arch enemies on a dime and vice versa. The soul mate connection is one of energy and feeling not of circumstance. Yet, circumstances are simply the medium for the energy to express itself through. The recognition we sense between people is through our feelings and can range between tsunamically overwhelming feelings or simple impressions that are brought to the surface of our awareness. And those feelings are usually triggered through a simple act or circumstance.

It’s common knowledge that if we have an immediate reaction to someone upon meeting them that our feelings will always give us an accurate measure as to how good or bad they will be for us in the long run. We’ve all, at one time or another, found ourselves saying “I have a good (or bad) feeling about this.” From that point, and if our mind believes that our original assessment might be in error or that it threatens our personal image or security, the mind will come up with Rationalizeany number of rationalizations to either confirm or deny the validity of those first impressions. In this case and more often than not, when we let the mind have the final say and it disagrees with our first impression, we almost always end up regretting our final decision. But here, we’re not too concerned with how good or bad they are for us but if the impression triggers a past life connection. The biggest difficulty for most people is in separating animal magnetism from past life recognition. Most people assume that the magnetism is somehow a past life connection. This usually occurs with people who are not subtly tuned. But, if we’ve done sufficient work on ourselves and have learned to discriminate the coarser vibrations from the subtler ones, we usually can tell the difference.

In lieu of the fact that so many levels of information are presented on our first meeting with someone, I think it’s safe to say that it’s easier to determine past life connections after the initial acquaintance has taken place and the relationship has had a little time to become comfortable and familiar with both people. Once this occurs it becomes easier to discriminate subtler differences in the impressions and feelings we pick up while relating. Essentially, the more intense and often overwhelming energies have settled and an emotional equilibrium has stage set-2returned putting the discrimination of feelings on a much more refined basis. This sets the stage for the actual dynamic that occurs triggering past life reflections. I use reflections instead of the word memories since memory usually refers to the storage of mentally assessed experiences. Spontaneous past life reflections happen in the much more subtle and intangible field of intuition while sometimes coupled with a feeling. Because of the subtlety of the connection, our combined physical senses, which usually determine if an experience is real for us or not, are not involved in the recognition of past life experiences resulting in our wondering whether we are simply making up what we perceive or if it had actually occurred. Past life recognition usually occurs through only one sense at a time. This enables clarity. The key to working with these impressions is to prevent the mind’s involvement and its tendency to combine our physical senses, thereby, reading only our intuitive and feeling perceptions through one sense. Once the mind becomes involved in the process we tend toward “fleshing out” the impression with what we think the meaning or experience must be according to our standards for assessing physical reality.

Past life regression-1When working with a hypnotherapist and regression, keeping us free from embellishing what we recognize is one of their jobs. This way the image remains true to the original impression. Linear thinking is antithetical to intuition and feeling. Yet, the human mind will always struggle to put what we know and what we perceive into linear terms so it will be able to use it in the processing of our physical world. This now leaves us only with the possible avenues for triggering past life impressions and feelings.

The dynamic is simple. The link occurs between our current relaxed awareness, often in an alpha state, with the past experience. It can and usually comes by way of one sense like a touch, a word (vibration), a phrase, a scent, a sound, a tune or any other perceived stimulus that somehow resonates with circumstances encountered in the past life experience. This is often Deja Vuperceived as what many call déjà vu. But déjà vu usually arrives through a combined sensory trigger.  The past life reflection usually occurs only through one sense. The trigger works the same way a memory is triggered but with the mind out of the picture, deeper impressions are more able to come to the surface. For example, if one person is caressing another and a very relaxed state is induced for one or both, an impression may come to the surface of either one or both the caresser and person being caressed. The act of caressing reverberates or echoes the past life experience and a resonance between this life and the past is enabled through the caressing. In the same way that a combination of flavors may bring us back to memorable times in our childhood, that same combination of flavors may also enable the surfacing of a past life experience attached to those same flavors provided our mind is briefly “out of commission.”

Any singular sensory experience may be enough to trigger a past life impression but we must be in a state where the mind and our current world doesn’t intrude or overshadow the impression with earthly qualifications and mental rationalizations. Similarly, it is like being in a crowded room with everyone loudly talking making it virtually impossible to hear a whisper. But if everybody is whispering, it is much easier to perceive more subtle sounds.

ScrutinySo, in assessing soul mate potential, we must be careful in our discrimination so we don’t fool ourselves or talk ourselves into believing that any feeling of familiarity is an indication of a soul mate when perhaps it is simply a past life connection. As with anything else, clear and concise discrimination is the key to our inner awareness.

missing-the-trainWhat we hear, see, feel and intuit from our experience is not perceived in the same way for each of us. For some of us tangible experiences provide the most clarity. For others, what is heard is more important. We all perceive in what we might call different modes. There are four of them. Each of them has a “format” of qualities that allow us to relate to others more effectively either through our senses, feelings, thoughts or intuition. When we relate to another person in the same mode the connection between us is dynamic and catalyzing in terms of how we perceive and understand. When it’s not and as the other person is speaking, we’re left with guessing as to their meaning as if we’ve been left standing on the platform while the train just whizzes by. For many people recognition of this aspect in our interactions is most often well below our threshold of awareness. Yet, all we can say is that we somehow “connect” with them more easily and deeply than anyone else. For others where we don’t “connect” we find ourselves saying that we simply had no idea what they were trying to say.

radio-stationWorking with modes is like tuning into a radio station. There are sometimes when we’re locked on to the frequency and other times it seems that we’ve just drifted into static. It could be said that each mode is a type of “headspace” unto itself requiring us to tune into the other person’s wavelength if we are to effectively understand or “grok” them. (grok is a term used in the book Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert Heinlein meaning to fully comprehend meaning on all levels and in all modes).

ListeningModes are important in that for some relationships the rapport is extremely strained and trying. For others it is fluid and easy. It’s easy to understand how the majority of our rapport in relationships is largely dependent on the degree to which each of us are able to allow ourselves to listen to each other separately from our own agendas and issues. But in recognizing our own expressions and those of our partners as coming through different modes, a higher or subtler form of listening is necessary. Its requirement is that personal agendas most be either worked through or set aside in order to navigate perceptively in differing modal interchanges. In the same way that being in a noisy room will drown out the words of a whispering companion, having an agenda will overpower our awareness through distraction to the point where we become unable to perceive gentler undercurrents. Lack of this capacity often can make or break our ability to communicate deeply and effectively beyond the simple words of what is being expressed. We might say that this is one of the methods of being able to “read between the lines” but is dimensionally different in that the process involves harmonizing with the perceptual undercurrent of our partner.

The modes I speak of were first publicized through the work of Carl Gustav Jung. For the sake of clarity and brevity I will paraphrase and simplify much of what I’ve learned. Not to do so would tie our brains in knots, especially, if we’re unfamiliar with his perspectives and work.

Jungian TypesOf the four modes through which we express and perceive, senses, feeling, thought and intuition, each has its own particular “flavor” of expressing and perceiving. So we’ll be on the same page when I say expression, I’m referring how we project energy and information. When I say perceive, I will simply mean how we receive, transmute and customize that energy and information so it resonates with what we have already learned, experienced and currently understand. Another way of saying this is our perception and projections are a function of the filters operating in our personal interchanges, namely, through our modes. As an example, we’ve been told that rose colored glasses can totally change how we perceive someone or something. We can comprehend more fully what I say simply by observing how we feel when we look through sunglasses of differing colors. We actually “feel” what we’re looking at differently. Let’s look at the modes and how they filter what we perceive and project.

Sense Receptive or Expressed - When our physical senses are the primary baseline through which we receive and assess our world, we tend to perceive and think of our experiences and circumstances in terms of what we believe to be tangible and, therefore, practical. We tend to be in the moment along with the feeling mode. One might say that, “If I can see it, feel it, taste it and touch it or smell it, it’s real enough for me.” We find our truth in the world through our senses. We are the scientists of the world, the statisticians, the engineers and any of those of us who require “proof” in the form of physical and tangible evidence to gain our belief and support in who we are and what we do. Since we operate based on sense verification, we tend to wait for the world to provide that to us before we will even consider investing ourselves. As a result of this we tend to be more cautious and premeditative than other modes in all that we do and say.

Feeling Receptive or Expressed - When our feelings are the receptive or driving force we might not even “go there” if what we feel doesn’t somehow mesh with what we feel or what might be assumed to be an uncomfortable or displeasing force. Feeling is an intangible, elusive, fluid and empathic and an involuntary movement within us. We are the artists, musicians, performers, activists, social workers, humanitarians and any career that takes our life direction and callings from an internal feeling. Thought may be involved if only to clarify but is often bypassed due to the intensity of the feeling or occurs after the wave has passed.

Like in the sensing mode, we perceive in the moment but often “percolate” our feelings until they surface in our awareness in a way that “feels right” for our comprehension or “grokking.” The dominating catalyst in our assessing rests in our recognition and alignment of and with the movement or current of what we’re feeling. Comparing with elicited memories gives us a language to use in order to convey to others what we feel in terms of prior events and circumstances. Our perceiving and recognizing a change of flow is our primary consideration in our process for discrimination and the memories simply provide reference points to convey a comprehended meaning. When we assess, the process becomes all absorbing to the exclusion of all else. Those of us who use other modes can gain a vague understanding of a feeling person’s process through descriptive words such as penetrating, instinctual, psychically sensitive, suspicious, permeable, textured and enveloping.

Thought Receptive or Expressed - When our thinking is the primary mover, all that is perceived is, first, converted to language, and then applied to a search for worldly intellectual and recognizable patterns with which we can align, validate and then direct our individual experiences and actions. We are the philosophers, writers, educators (systemic), theorists, mathematicians and intellectuals of the world. We are emotionally detached and feelings are considered irrational and are, essentially, ignored. Our primary operative space rests in abstraction gained through a process of distillation. Our actions are almost never a function of being in the moment and every action taken or anticipated is structured and planned before ever being acted on. Any choice becomes an arduous process involving weighing, measuring and assessing experience for its potential to align with the most advantageously known format or structure. Words that best describe us are: abstract, rational, mental, pre-emptive, theoretical, comparative, separative, conceptual, timed, planned, strategized and logical.

Intuition Receptive or Expressed - When intuition is the primary mover, we live more in the moment than any other mode. Thought is rarely part of the process. We may or may not actually hear you speaking. As you do we receive flashes of you or someone like you in complete scenarios much like multidimensional photographs but straddling the barriers between past, present and future. We receive everything as a complete multidimensional “picture” and then plunge into fleshing out what we’ve seen. Like a dream, linear explanations are often useless as they lose the depth of the experience as we attempt to squeeze our multidimensional flash into a linear timeline. When we act, we go from receiving the intuitive flash directly into activity attempting to create or manifest the complete “picture” of what we’ve seen in the flash. We are the composers, architects, psychoanalysts, inventors, quantum physicists, chefs and designers. Words that describe us are experiential, impulsive, active, immersive, self-trusting, conceptually inclusive, comprehensive and aligning rather than directive.

What dreams may come-2Essentially, sense and thought based rapports are tangible formats and feeling and intuitive are intangible. This accounts for which of them are in the moment and which are time based; which are timeless and which are time constrained. When we mix formats, not only are the modes out of sync but the time formats they filter through are also. For example, we’ve all heard the comic routines about the logical husband and the emotionally based wife. One is tangibly based, the other is intangibly based. Is it really any wonder why it is so difficult for them to understand each other? Rational and irrational are exchanged in comments to and about each other as if one or the other is inferior. But the truth is, both are viable but through different kinds of reception and projection. This causes massive problems in what is understood and what is assumed about each other’s intentions and perceptions. What one expects of the other, the other has no clue as to what is meant and vice versa.

BootiesUnfortunately, our culture has had a predilection toward assuming that the modal difference is present due to gender determination. Over the years, this expectation has been changing and the lines between have been blurring our ability to know what to expect from either sex, especially, with the growing influence of unisex “standards.” This change has been forcing us to look deeper than at our gender and surface appearances, slowly evolving us toward becoming a lot more sensitive to the subtleties of our differences and similarities. Of course there are still older “holdouts” left whose personal security lies based in their traditional assumptions about the sexes perpetuating the colloquial “battle of the sexes.” But as the older generations die off, the younger generations, who have not been as strongly indoctrinated in the older assumptions, will move quickly past the old prejudices and insecurities and focus more on the subtler similarities and differences in individual communicative rapports.

My-Way or highwayThe way to accelerate and facilitate our own ability to sensitize ourselves to and recognize these subtle similarities and differences is to first, uncover and work at moving past the agendas generated by our own personal insecurities. This will remove the loud voices in the room so we can hear the whispers. And then second, listen for the type of syntax used to describe how others experience us and their world. Sense and thought based personalities will describe their world in terms of reality, proof and what they can physically sense or conceptualize. Feeling and intuition based personalities will describe their worlds in terms that will seem fluid, irrational and intangible. Our key to perceiving the difference is hearing words such as, “I hear or understand what you’re saying” or “I feel the difference.” Listen carefully. The words chosen to describe their experience will tell you everything you need to know about your relationship rapport and how to tune into the individual modes of others. Good luck! It’s an interesting and challenging exercise in paying attention.

Intuitive light-2When we speak of intuition there appears to be many different interpretations about what the word actually means. Some of us equate it with instinct. Some of us with gut feeling. Some haven’t a clue and others refer to it as something that is intangible asserting that only some people have it let alone use it. The one common thread between all the interpretations is that it is intangible. With this I tend to agree. But let’s look more closely so we can make a distinction between them so we have a clean common idea of what we’re delineating.

The most common intangible is referred to as our gut feeling. It is even accepted as being present by the scientific community but with a wink and a tremendous amount of reservation since it is not “provable.” Probably the most important distinction we can make to refine our understanding of how to use the intangibles is the difference between our gut feeling and our Fight or flightintuition. Even though instinct is something that is much more connected to our physical history and genetics it only gives us the ability to act for the benefit of our safety and comfort without our recognition of its presence making mediation by the mind unnecessary. The fear response to danger is a good example showing how our instinctual or automatic reaction to the presence of danger leads us to fight or flight before the involvement of our rationalizing mind telling us what is needed.

The biggest difference between gut feeling and intuition is that the gut feeling only supplies the urge toward some sort of action or inaction while intuition may contain the same urge but presents as a “full picture” of its potential, if not actual, completion in the future.

Our gut feeling is a nebulous and generally undefined area where as the intuition can supply us with a crystal clear flash of where our actions might lead us. With intuition, we essentially, receive a “photograph” of the finished product but also with feeling.

SHbox2print23The dynamics of intuition operate much like a dream in that it is free of the constructs of time and therefore often difficult to define in linear terms. We can see the effects of the linear mind’s attempts to delineate a dream by its inability to create a linear thread out of events perceived in a multidimensional format. It’s much like trying to describe a globe on flat paper. The paper does not provide a dimension of depth for its fullest description.

To more fully describe the nature and dynamics of intuition it would be helpful to describe the process of dreaming which essentially yields the same results but without the conscious mind to interfere…at least until we wake up and attempt to apply it.

When we fall asleep the body is no longer subject to the sequencing applied by the mind. The mental tension that holds and sorts with it is now absent and the body may regenerate itself through returning to a state of bodily and “mindless” balance. The body has a natural ability to reestablish stasis when it is free of external factors. The mind is, essentially, an external factor by virtue of its ability to use separation of characteristics in the physical world as its organizational tool for comparison leading to forming judgments through comparison and their ultimate commitment to memory creating a byproduct of triggerable emotion. Feeling and emotion are interrelated but there is an important difference between them which is much too long to cover here.

Intuitive dreamscape-2In sleep, the intuitive landscape is re-established (it was within us before we were born as was feeling). The influence of the mind has been “terminated” through the collapse of time. We are aware of the separation of things which allows us to define them but we are now in a sea of feeling where everything happens at once and everything is interconnected. This is the domain of intuition. Here, everything “occurs” in a flash, instantaneously, at once, with no beginning or end. It simply exists or it doesn’t. There is no before or after. For intuition, there is only now. What we perceive flashes in and out; exists then it doesn’t…or never did. There is no past (memory). There is no future (intention). There is only “I am” or “I am not.” When we change environments in our dream the refocusing of our awareness makes it occur “instantaneously” to our perception. Suddenly, we are just “there.” Are you finally starting to comprehend the fleeting quality and evasiveness of feeling this way? There is no separation of the feeler and the experience. In intuition, they are one. When the mind is included, they are not.

Sheet musicNow, with everything happening in the same instant, how do you describe what you perceive? Beethoven wrote that he received his symphonies in a flash and then spent years trying to put them to paper. When an idea comes to us how does it arrive? In a long process sojourning through rationalizations or in a flash? In intuition we receive the potential realities for our lives in “living snapshots” of potential experience, like his symphonies, in full color and dimension and we then struggle to guide our lives to the suggested intuitive “destination.”

Forest path-1When we begin questioning ourselves about our life path, the mind is always involved by virtue of asking the question. The hard part comes in our desiring and expectation of receiving a tangible answer. Because the mind is so structured and time constricted, we expect to receive the answer in real time or in a way that’s easily rationalized through the mind’s ability to separate out the components of the idea. In constructing that expectation we create a barrier to our ability to receive the answer in an intuitive format. That is, we lose the ability to free ourselves from the mind and open to the fullness in receiving our answer in more than one temporal dimension. In other words, we get in our own way through using the mind. Intuition has no relevance or connection to expectation…expectation is a primary characteristic of the mind. This is why, when we meditate, it’s easier to receive intangible information because the effects of the body have been intentionally “switched off.” When this occurs, the senses and the expectations of the mind are also “switched off.” The “disconnected” mind now becomes easily viewed as a stream of thoughts passing at a distance tempting us to re-involve ourselves with their daily endeavors. If we succumb, the mind regains control of our awareness. If we maintain the disconnection, deeper avenues of awareness become available to us through intuition. Hence, the door is open to having an intuitive or spiritual experience.

The next step, invariably, involves our ability to make the decision that best aligns with our intuition. This is where many people get lost. It’s easy to have a flash of intuition, a little bit harder to recognize it but even harder to implement it. How would we know if it is the right decision to align us with the possible future we’ve seen in the flash? The process is simple but requires an attentive observation of our feelings. This can be best explained through an example.

New car keys-2In keeping it simple, let’s use our intuitive flash of our buying a new automobile. Of course when this occurs, the mind will immediately jump in and begin rationalizing all the pros and cons related to its possibilities. This is where most people get stuck. We’ve all been trained since childhood to give the mind dominance over any and all important decisions that we are faced with. The key for making a decision in alignment with our heart’s best interest lies with our feelings not our mind. The mind is only a tool and available to work out the details of our decisions. Our heart must be the driving force if we are to align ourselves with our inner path and the heart only speaks through feelings. So, what to do? The process is easy.

who-am-i-2First, make the decision to purchase the new automobile. Also, begin aligning your finances with making whatever payments may be involved. Start the process with your insurance company to cover it. Get the paper work necessary to exchange the registration. In short, start setting up all the steps in alignment with making your choice manifest itself. Having done all this, now stop. Ask yourself how you feel. Are you excited? Panicked? At ease? Looking beyond the task? Does it worry you? Does it lead you toward thinking of all the possibilities your life might now offer? The feeling it evokes now involves your gut feeling. Remember that nebulous undifferentiated feeling of fight or flight? Now, with your feelings having been observed change your decision. Decide not to buy the automobile. Begin shutting down all the things you put into motion to make that happen. NOW how do you feel? Relief? Disappointment? Sadness? Happiness? Now ask yourself which set of feelings felt better? The one set that feels better is the set that’s aligned with your heart. The more you do this with your important decisions, the easier and faster this process will progress and the more Self-Trust and confidence you will develop in your ability to know what it is that you need to do, or not do, to follow and remain on your life’s path.

The fact that our culture relies so heavily on its mental capacity for its important decisions is testimony to the fact that we have strayed far from having the use of our feelings as an indicator and validation for knowing what is right for us. Our paths are not always aligned with what our society wants and needs for its security and consistency. Since our feelings arise bull chasing matadorwithin us involuntarily, they are uncontrollable and often discouraged and denied. Their participation in our lives terrifies our minds which, in deferring to the heart for our decisions, reduces our mind’s ability to remain in charge of our fate. There must develop a balance between our hearts and minds if we are to immerse ourselves most fully in the experiences we have chosen to feel and learn in this lifetime. The heart tells us what to do. The mind tells us how to do it. Is it really any wonder that when we use our minds to tell us what to do that we don’t understand why we don’t feel good about how we’re doing it?

Animal Superiority-1Are we really top dog in a life process that’s millions of years older than we are? Do we really think that we’re smarter? Wiser? More aware? What sets us apart? Why do we believe that something does? Why do we feel that we are different? As long as we can remember thinking…thinking? Is that it?

I do believe that we are different but not necessarily better or superior. As a species, we have a dimension giving us a specific distinction in the animal kingdom, to which we most certainly do belong, but with what we consider additional survival skills. The added dimension is not thinking or thought. Thinking and thought are a function of the additional dimension. That dimension is an awareness of the passage of time. I do believe that other mammals, maybe other genera also, have recognition of the passage of time but because they don’t have language skills that are as specifically separative or discriminatory as Homo sapiens, their perception is perhaps more rudimentary than ours. Granted, a newborn Homo sapien may not have the survival skills as broadly developed at birth as other mammals might, however, I do believe that as we begin our life our ability to sense physically and psychically is comparable to other mammals. Please note that when I say psychically, I’m merely referring to the ability to sense difference in the movement of energy. As we become “humanized,” those abilities slowly become trained out of us, pushed into the background of our awareness and eventually regress into what we call our unconscious. We do have senses that are inherent in the rest of the animal kingdom; it’s just that they are currently dormant. Let’s look at what gives us our ability to perceive time.

Salvador Dali TimeAt the risk of trying to define time, let’s just say that it is our perception of movement through space. We do know that when we are totally involved in what we’re doing, we don’t notice the passage of time. If we think about a time when we’re so involved in a project and when we came to check the time, we’re very often surprised how time seems to have passed so quickly. Conversely, when we’re anticipating or waiting for an event or occurrence, time feels as if it slows down to the point where it feels like it’s almost standing still. To wit, when we’re children, we’re always anticipating something. We feel like we’re doing nothing but waiting. Time “moves” slowly. When we’re older, we’re no longer anticipating as many things as we were when we were children and time seems to fly by. So, I think that you can see that how quickly time moves is a function of our perception and where we put our attention. The more we anticipate, the slower it appears to move. The more engrossed we become in what we’re doing, the faster it moves.

Now let’s look at how we perceive the passage of time. Its root lies in our ability to develop language and discriminatory or separative skills. Our mind is effective through its ability to be able to separate the timing of our experiences from each other. When we first learn to separate we give birth to the mind through the distinction between what feels good and what does not. How do we do this? As we develop language, we attach different learned words to experiences that feel good and pleasurable and others to those that don’t. We then we hold them attached to those specific experiences, in our mind in what we call our memory. Each stored experience becomes a combined snapshot of the experience, the feeling that arose with it and our pleasure assessment. The order of storage tells us what came before and what came after. This establishes our first recognition of the passage of time; our perception of the past.

Linear timeBecause our mind can use our learned language to tell the difference between what came before and what came after, we are able to use this same ability to create a linear construct of events that project into the future for a possible order of events to be anticipated or waited for. This eventually becomes combined with what we want or don’t want. This establishes our second recognition of the passage of time; our perception of a possible future.

When events are in the process of occurring and before they are compared to what has already occurred or to what projection might occur and we are having the experience, we perceive the present. This establishes our third recognition of the passage of time: our perception of the present or being in the moment.

Back to the animal kingdom and the potential for Homo sapiens to possess a mind and the ability to separate past, present and future. Now, it is assumed that the rest of the animal kingdom supposedly, may have a mind but not the refined ability to develop as sophisticated a language and thought process as humans, we believe that this leaves them unable to create a more perceivable distinction in the passage of time.

Mysterious tunnel to the lightInitially, we may see this as an advantage over other mammals in that it implies that our ability to think through our defensive and survival capabilities may appear to be a lot more sophisticated and effective. But in the same way that we have the ability to perceive the passage of time, we also have the potential to get lost or locked in the different dimensions of time. That is, unlike other mammals, we can get “stuck” in the past or the future to the detriment of our present and future well-being and enjoyment. Since other mammals have virtually no,or limited,perception of past or future, their attention remains primarily in the moment. Not necessarily so for Homo sapiens. What appears to be the mammalian kingdom’s ability to “remember” experiences is primarily a function of conditioning, not necessarily memory. Memory requires a mental structure of comparison in order to exist and progress. Even if other mammals do possess a rudimentary capacity, it is nowhere nearly developed as well as Homo sapiens. Due to this, most humans suffer from severe personification when it comes to perceiving what animals might exhibit in their behavior, especially, our pets.

Hit by a busLet’s look a little more closely at Homo sapien's potential for getting lost or locked into the past or the future. Because the human mind can construct and project an anticipated future, our attention doesn’t always remain in the moment. If we’re crossing the street while our attention is focused on fantasizing about desired or fearful circumstances occurring in our home or careers, we might not be paying attention to the bus careening down the street aimed in our direction. In this, our focus on the future can have lethal consequences. If we’re on a date with someone whom we find extremely attractive while thinking about how we were cheated on in a past relationship, we may miss a wonderful opportunity to create a new future and a much more rewarding experience through obsessing over our past.

Let’s take a look at another possible misconceptions we may have about ourselves and other mammals; fear. A human’s fear is almost entirely wrapped up in the potential of “what if” or what might occur and is future oriented. Our imagination is our most influential component in the way we perceive and deal with fear. Why? Because with our ability to perceive and create a charged imagination about the future and its possible outcomes, we often paralyze ourselves with fear over making the “wrong” move or taking the “wrong” action through imagining the hawk & rabbitdevastating scenarios that might occur. But if other mammals don’t have the same potential to fabricate a possible future, how does fear register with them? Since they exist mostly in the moment, we believe that fear is essentially a function of instinct and conditioning. It’s not fear as we would define it. They don’t define it. They have no language to separate it out from other feelings. They simply feel it. A rabbit’s tendency to remain motionless or move like a bullet is not the result of their looking for or expecting the hawk to swoop down and attack. It is simply an innate instinctual vigilance that has been conditioned and inbred into their genetic makeup over thousands of generations of repeated experience and evolution. They live in the moment. It has become an integral part of their perceptual and instinctual repertoire. It seems that Homo sapiens have essentially lost access to the awareness of those abilities through being conditioned to mentally focus on only the past and the future. Yet, it still remains buried under Animal sensestons of mentally judged memories and experiences. We know this because as we consciously make an effort to re-tune ourselves to nature and our natural surroundings, some of those “senses” slowly begin to reemerge.

But there is another ability that many of us humans agree is innate within our makeup; intuition. Since what our culture generally accepts as being true is that which has the potential to be physically verified (agreed upon by others), only a portion of our population actually accepts the validity of its existence. Since most of western humanity is in agreement with being or feeling superior to the animal kingdom, I believe that it is very unlikely that there are many people that even consider that animals may also possess intuition and that it is not merely a function of repeated and evolutionary physical experience and conditioning that eventually translates into becoming a genetic progeny in their DNA.

For the majority of us who believe that we are more than just our physical existence we can easily consider that we must exist in a somewhat different state of being before we either acquire, enter or construct the current physical bodies we reside in now. It is my belief that our mode of movement before we incarnated existed within the fields of feelings and intuition, NonLinear timeneither of which requires mental functioning or time to operate. This is also why they are so difficult to explain or describe to another. They are also the fields in which our deepest dreams occur. To wit, how many times have you attempted to explain a dream in earthly language only to get lost in the confusing time and overlay of events and people? The more “awake” you become, the more elusive the dream becomes. Feelings and intuition do not follow a linear path. They are simply innate, timeless and occur involuntarily. It’s also important to note that we retain them both through our incarnation. These fields are where empathy originates from. Yet, our “civilized” training has had the effect of eclipsing them with linearity and the time constraints of our mental functioning within the physical world. We know animals have feelings. Who’s to say they don’t also have intuition? What may even seem more curious to consider is that they also dream. Have you watched your dog’s feet and REM (rapid eye movement) when they’re sleeping? This would explain many of our experiences with them that we’ve been puzzled by in trying to explain while having been unable to trace the “answers” through physical instincts and genetics.

animal masterySo, back to our original question. Are we really superior to animals? I think not since we generally possess the same characteristics, especially, as with mammals. But we have and added dimension, time, which brings with it its tool to track and record it…our mind and the development of thought and language. This inclusion is usually what most people, claiming to be superior, use to set themselves above animals. However, there are many things that we appear to be unable to do based on the submerging of our instincts, feelings and intuition in deference to our use of the intellect. But our use of the intellect presents its own problems in that we more often than not allow ourselves to become trapped in our future “what ifs” and in our regrets or obsessions over our past “performance” and the resulting judgments by our peer group, families and authorities. We often miss being in the moment when it counts. So, who’s to say who is superior? I think that determination depends on what kind of standard we’re using to compare. I think that once we evolve enough to maintain a balance between past, present and future and eliminate enough of our fear of loss of control to allow our feelings and intuition to re-emerge and integrate with our eventually to be refined mental faculties, perhaps then we might be able to state that we have an added skill and dimension that adds a wholeness or unity to the pairing of our energetic and our physical existence. But to be superior? I think not. That’s a judgmental compensation applied by someone who feels himself to be “less than” man's best friendothers of his own species. Right now animals, especially mammals, might be “one up” on us in that they are not saddled with getting caught in the past or future and seem to be very content operating in the here and now. In that, they bring us tremendous peace with our tuning into being in the moment with them.

 

Path2As humans all of us inevitably come to a juncture in our lives where we contemplate the possibility of there being either a goal or direction that our life “needs” to take for us to feel happy, fulfilled, but most importantly, worthy. This consideration falls into two varieties: either the means justifies the ends or the ends justifies the means. This may seem confusing at first but if we look at those of us who feel that our life is about the journey, we might say that our means justifies the ends. If we feel that our life is about a goal, then most often, our ends will justify our means. Though both methods have equal merit and deserve equal consideration, the underlying common thread is a feeling of destiny connected to a vague expectation that our path through life is to somehow have a purpose, reason or an “end result.” For those of us who believe purpose or reason is self-determined, we might assume that we had some sort of previous intention before we came into this life. For those of us who believe that we were “created” by someone or something other than ourselves, we might assume that there is a role that we are required to fulfill. Again and either way, both assumptions imply a path or direction that must be traversed if we are to fulfill either of these journeys by arriving at a place of worthiness relative to our original intention.

What is The Path? Since, in this world, we have no way of “verifying” those intentions or expectations, we often find ourselves looking for milestones along the way confirming that we are truly on target resonating with and toward our original intentions. This path is generally called Dharma in the east, God’s Will in the west and The Path of Heart in the domain of metaphysics and popular spirituality. But again, regardless of what we call it, The Path is still comprised of a seemingly vague and almost elusive quality requiring deep insights and focused quiet time that can only be achieved when we are disconnected from the commotion generated Alone time-1by our busy physical world. We reach an awareness of “it” through meditation, prayer, communion with nature and, sometimes, even through sex. The awareness of or connection to it often comes at unexpected times and “rides” unbidden and uncontrollable currents which I will label as feelings and intuition (please note that feelings are slightly different from emotions and are discussed elsewhere). Its elusiveness can be attributed to the fact that feelings and intuition are not time bound and what we tend to call eternal. The fact that our minds are temporal only adds often to our feeling frustration in dealing with them. There are questions that we can ask ourselves that will “tune us into” this elusive frequency bringing the elements of The Path to a mentally cohesive perception. When this occurs it’s like “seeing” the invisible wind but only as if by virtue of it’s passing through a field of wheat. Through asking focused questions we mentally gather pertinent life circumstances forming our own field of wheat revealing our being on The Path or off. In doing so we might sense a feeling of calm. This will tell us that we ARE on our Path. If we sense a feeling of uncomfortableness, agitation or panic, this will tell us that we are NOT on our Path. Our feelings are the gauge we use to determine the reliability of our internal compass. Our intuition is the channel for the incoming information. We must allow ourselves to have faith in these intangible parts of ourselves since our mental logic and acuity cannot effectively operate in the timeless environment of feelings or intuition. Feelings and intuition were the principle venues of our “movement” before the forming of our minds and even before we came into this life. Let’s take a look at the questions that will bring us insight as to our position on or off The Path.

Hold the Door 4 UThe First Question to Ask - Do you follow your inner urges or do you defer to the convenience and preferences of others? Many of us have been raised with manners that stipulate that our guests, our elders and those considered to be “infirm” should proceed ahead of us in our activities as a matter of courtesy. This is in line with the belief that we are here on this earth to serve each other. Where this might serve to make our daily comings and goings run smoothly and give us a planned choreography for how we should interact with each other, it does not give us a clear definition of how much deference we should be giving each other. As a result, those of us who have an overly humble opinion of ourselves often deprive ourselves of our own preferences when presented with our assumed deference to others. This has the effect of eclipsing our personal urges for expression and action that are based on our own preferences. Since our direction for action on The Path comes through our feelings and intuition, this short circuits our inner compass and we end up moving in directions that don’t resonate with where we need to be. We’re off The Path.

Excessive Humility-1Excessive humility can be a function of low self-esteem and poor Self-Trust. The more we lack Self-Trust and the more we don’t answer our own inner urgings toward our preferences through deferring excessively to others for their convenience and toward their preferences, the further off The Path we stray. It is extremely important that we listen to and follow our inner urges that we may remain on course for what our life path was originally intended. Of course we must consider a reasonable balance between our needs and the needs and preference of others. When we reach the balance point between both, a sense of calm and accomplishment will wash over us and we will know that we are where we need to be to resonate with our own path.

judges-2The Second Question to Ask - Who do you answer to and why? As we are raised as children we are taught that our parents and elders hold authority over us. They tell us what we can do, what we can’t, how we should behave, what we should pay attention to, how we should perceive ourselves and a whole host rules and requirements. As children, we know that this is necessary to initially preserve our safety and wellbeing. But our parents are people too. And they have their own issues and insecurities. Sometimes their own insecurities are so strong that they need to extend their authority over who we are and what we do in order to give their lives meaning and purpose.

As we get older, our urge for independence and the need to “test” ourselves rise up from within us and become an issue. But when we reach that age where leaving the nest is the next necessary step in our growth and our parents attempt to hold on to their “jurisdiction” over us, we begin to chomp at the bit and strain against the reins. Something deep within us knows when it is time to move on in our own direction under our own power. How much Self-Trust we have been allowed to develop at that point will determine the need for us to choose between whether we fold under family pressure and stay or strike out on our own by leaving. When enough Self-Trust has NOT been developed either path will have troubling consequences. Those who fold will move through life resenting and blaming their parents for their inability to Independent-1“succeed.” Those who escaped the nest will simply find others in the world who resemble their parents and their authority, transfer that authority to them and then blame them for their inability to succeed. Those who stay will exhibit passive aggressiveness and those who move on will exhibit open resistance. All the while and in both venues the culprit for the lack of success is the lack of Self-Trust leading to assigning failure to a scapegoat in order to avoid the exposure of our own perceived shame and self-blame for not listening to our hearts.

The key to understanding why who we answer to is such a strong indicator of whether we are following our own path or not is the fact that when we myopically give our attention to resisting or rebelling against the rules and authority laid down by others, we ignore our own urges and preferences missing the opportunity to follow a line of direction that will move on toward answering our original intentions for coming into this life. If at the bottom line we only answer to ourselves, which is certainly an indicator of strong Self-Trust, odds are we are well on the way toward living our own path. Following our own path has often been quoted as our “following the beat of a different drummer.”

The biggest encouragement toward folding under family pressure is the fear of losing the family’s love, support and acceptance. The biggest encouragement toward escaping is the potential for finding the needed love, support and acceptance outside the family. Both fall away when we have felt the needed love, support and acceptance of the family through being allowed to trust our own judgment.

Bad DogThe Third Question to Ask - How does what you’re doing make you feel? All of us have done things out of deference to others or because doing so would have avoided a ration of #$%& coming from someone important to us. But in acting this way and if we are honest with ourselves, we find ourselves with a sick feeling in our stomach or even a sense of panic knowing that we’re either going to end up in a situation that we will seriously regret or miss an opportunity that would put us on course for what our heart has intended for us.

The point here is that our feelings are our barometer as to whether the “callings of our heart” are being addressed or not. If they are, there usually falls a calm over us. We sleep better. We feel relaxed and purposeful during our daily activities. We feel patience for ourselves and others and a sense that we are not missing something by what were are or aren’t doing. We feel “on target.” When we stray from The Path, this feeling of calm and “rightness” is absent and replaced with fear, panic, regret, agitta, remorse, shame, sadness, and if it has been allowed to progress too far, depression.

Peak-SuccessFollowing our path takes courage, insight and a willingness to go and do where and what others may often find distressing to them. We must walk a fine balance between what our heart tells us to be and do for ourselves and what our compassion demands of us for others, who might be unable to see or find their own path without our assistance. This training should begin in childhood but with the constant and increasing pressure to deal with things of a survival nature, we are often, and sometimes violently, herded or limited into attending things that leave us unable to answer, or sometimes even consider, the song and path of our hearts. Asking these questions and many more variations of them will bring our focus back to listening to the conversation within the deepest parts of us reminding us of why we came here.
